Mango Support
Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I add my comics?
Sources > Add a folder, browse to the folder that holds them, and tap Open. Mango indexes it in place; nothing is copied, moved, or renamed. You can also drop .cbz files into Mango's own folder in the Files app.
- How do I read off my NAS?
Sources > Add a NAS share. Enter the host (nas.local, or its IP), the share name, optionally a folder inside it to treat as the top of the library, and your username and password. Tap Test connection before saving. Credentials go into the iOS Keychain, never into the library file.
- Does reading from the NAS download the whole volume first?
No. A .cbz is a zip, and a zip stores its index at the end of the file, so Mango reads a few kilobytes to find the pages and then fetches one page at a time as you turn. A 328 MB volume opens in well under a second over SMB. Use Download only when you want a comic available off your network.
- Why won't my .cbr files show up?
CBR is RAR, and the only RAR decoder is non-free software that cannot be shipped inside a GPL-3 app; 7z isn't supported either. Mango tells you under Sources when a folder has some. Converting is lossless: unpack and re-zip the images as .cbz — the Mango repository has a script (scripts/convert-to-cbz.sh) that does a whole folder, or a mounted NAS share, in one go. Most digital releases are already .cbz.
- What formats does Mango read?
CBZ (and plain .zip), PDF, EPUB light novels, and folders of loose page images — JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, GIF, TIFF. A folder with three or more images in it is treated as one unzipped volume.
- How does Mango decide what belongs to which series?
From the filename, using the conventions releases actually use: v01, Vol. 3, c012.5, #45, and bracket tags for groups and publishers. Folder names win when they are more complete than the filename. A folder is parsed as a set, so a bare “027” next to v01–v05 and c020–c026 is understood as chapter 27, not volume 27.
- It guessed the series or volume wrong. Can I fix it?
Yes. For a whole shelf with an odd name, open the series, tap the ••• button and choose Look Up Series: it finds the series on AniList, you pick the right match, and its proper name and author go on every volume. For one volume, touch and hold it (or swipe it) and tap Edit to correct the title, series, volume, chapter, or author. Corrections are stored separately from the file and survive a rescan.
- How do I switch between right-to-left and left-to-right?
Tap the middle of the page to show the controls, then the arrow in the top bar. It applies to the whole series, so setting it once on volume 1 carries to volume 2. The default for new books is in Settings.
- Why is a double-page spread shown on its own?
That is deliberate. In landscape, pages pair up like a printed book — cover alone, then 2-3, 4-5. When a page is wider than it is tall it is a real double-page spread, so Mango gives it the whole screen rather than slicing the art down the middle, then re-syncs the pairing after it.
- How do I read webtoons?
Just open them. A book whose pages are tall strips is recognised and opens in vertical scroll, full width, with no gaps; scroll past the last page to finish the chapter. Some webtoon releases are cut into short pages that don't look like strips — for those, open the reader settings (the icon in the top bar) and set Layout to Continuous scroll once; it applies to the whole series.
- Where did the covers come from? Can I change one?
Page one of each comic, extracted in the background after every scan and cached on device. To use a different one, tap ••• on a series (or touch and hold a volume) and choose Find Cover: it searches MangaDex, AniList and Apple Books for that series and volume, sending only the name and volume number, and only when you tap it. You can also use an image from Photos or Files, and Use Original Cover goes back to page one.
- Does my reading position sync between my iPhone and iPad?
Yes — reading positions, bookmarks, ratings, your reading log and daily reading time — over your own iCloud account using Apple's key-value storage. It never touches a server of ours. Disable iCloud Drive for Mango in Settings to keep everything on-device.
- Can Mango download comics for me?
No. Mango reads files you already have. There is no built-in catalog or downloader, and there never will be.
- Will Mango ever modify my files?
No. Everything it writes stays in its own container: cover thumbnails in its cache, covers you pick, and a small JSON library file. Your comics are read and never written to, renamed, or moved.
